Fysikdator support of the physics departments computers
- Harware and software support of individual Mac+PC's
- Aside from general network support, all support of all hardware and software
section is the responsibility
of the individual, group, or institution that uses the equipment. Special
contracts between users and fysikdatorn can be made for extended support.
- In order to coordinate these computers with the section network,
each institution can designate a limited number of individuals who
can directly address questions to fysidatorn.
- Starting 2000-01-01 all questions concerning personal Mac or PC computers will
be referred to the person who is designated to provide that support.
It is the responsibility of each institution to make sure this person is
available and listed.
- The list of individuals who are to contact FD personnel for Mac/PC questions can be found at
http://fy.chalmers.se/teknikerlista.html.
In order to be on this list, the person must be reasonable knowledgable about computers
in addition to being willing to provide support others at their institution. It is also
expected that these individuals participate in relevant information meetings and seminars.
- email support to all members of the physics department, including Mac+PC
- fysikdatorn maintains an IMAP and POP server which is accessed via SSL.
- configuring an email program which uses this service is the responsibilit of the user
- explicit instructions for configuring Netscape Communicator will be available on a web page
- mailbox sizes are limited; the current limit is about 30 Mb.
- uploading oversize mailboxes to the client computer is the responsibility of the computer owner
- a web interface to the mail server will be available by 2000-01-01.
- NT Terminal servers supported by FD
- A fee, to be determined by "Fysikdatornämnden," will allow all department
staff to have access to the NT Server.
- For Mac and PC, installation and upgrades of the client program is the responsibility
of the computer owner.
- Those programs that installed by FD on the NT server will also be maintained by FD, but
instructions for using the programs remains the responsibility of the individual.
- Personal installation of user programs on the NT server is discouraged but not prohibited.
- The NT Terminal Servers are primarily intended for administrative tasks; using the
resources for numerically intensive applications is strictly is prohibited.
- Printing is supported only on publicly available networked printers; printing on client printers is
not supported.
- Fysidatornämden ultimately decides what programs are installed on the NT Server should
such intervention be necessary.
- SUN Solaris environment
- The SUN Solaris environment has traditionally been given wider supported under the following conditions.
- The owner of the supported Sun computer must have a current hardware service contract
- Root priviledges are solely maintained by the fysikdatorn
- A fee, agreed upon between the Sun users and fysikdatorn, is paid for the the extended support.
- The major reason for this extended support is that the UNIX operating system is compatible with the
whole computing network at physics and there is a very small marginal effort to accomodate
additional workstations.
