Learning objective -Understand Newton's third law?

"Everyone misunderstands Newton' third law
(including many of the people who teach it)"

(Laurillard, 1993, p38)

  1. Aim
    To understand Newton's third law
  2. What would count
Being able to name forces i in both static and dynamic events
  3. Is this precise enough
No: Does it mean all forces? Should the forces be specifically named as paired forces? What kind of dynamic events? Motion under gravity? Electrostatics?... Revise 2 and repeat 3.
  4. Is it possible to understand N3 without being able to do this?
Well, a student may be able to understand N3 without being able to apply it to electrostatic forces, so exclude these!
  5. Is2 now complete
No, e.g. the students should be able to predict what will happen in dynamic situtations. Add to 2, repeat 3 and 5
  6. Final definition - after a few iterations
Aim: To understand Newton's third law.
    Objectives: students shouldbe able to
    1. label the principal forces acting in static situations
    2. label the principal forces acting in situations of motion under grvity and under motive forces
    3. state which forces are paired
    4. predict the consequent motion in defined dynamic situations, that require the use of the Third law.
