The building work is about to start. This will be a difficult time
for all of us but we will try to make sure that the disruption is kept
to a minimum. Information sheets will be made available, detailing the
major work planned for a period of three weeks in advance. The first of
these can be found at the links below (in Swedish and in English). The
information will also be posted on notice boards.

The area around the entrance to Fhuset will be out of bounds as from
15th August 2003. There will be access via a tunnel (past the gas
storage
area) to the lift next to the present entrance but the main entrance
should
be via MC2. Kemivägen will be used to transport material to the
building
site.

Time schedule for office evacuation is here.
2003-05-19
There will be an information meeting at 11:00 on Tuesday 27th May in
F6306 to present the status of the plans for the Forskarhus renovation.
Details of the various stages of the renovation, time schedule,
installations,
what disruptions to expect etc. will be presented.
Representatives from Chalmers Fastighet and Akademiska hus will be
present.
2003-03-20
Here is the simplified time schedule for the renovation stages. This
shows the times when groups have to evacuate old labs and move into the
new ones. The timing is very strict and will have to be rigidly kept
to,
in order to avoid any delays.
Note that the floor numbers are the new ones (i.e. according to the
MC2 numbering). The new level 8 is what is now level 6 etc.
Etapp 1 involves the two laboratory corridors on the western side of
the building and the central installation shaft. Labs in the central
laboratory
corridor that are presently supplied from the central shaft will be
temporarily
supplied from the eastern installation shaft during this stage if
necessary.
Etapp 2 involves the central and eastern lab corridors, the offices,
the bridge (to Origo) and the entrance and elevator on the southern
side
of the building.

2003-03-11
The renovation stages have been simplified and the work is now
basically
divided into two stages: stage 1 involves renovating the two lab
corridors
on the western side of the building, stage 2 involves the rest of the
labs
and the offices.
The present time plan is that work should start on the western side
of the building at the beginning of August (2003). Completion date is
still
the end of 2004. A detailed time plan is still being prepared by
Akademiska
Hus. I will distribute this as soon as I have it.

A "trial lab" is being prepared on level 7 (present level 5) in room
5210. Here we will test the new lighting and also prepare examples of
the
various installations, floor material, colour scheme etc. The corridor
immediately outside this lab has been prepared with new corridor
lighting.
It is probable, although not yet certain, that a "trial office" will
also be prepared (preliminary location 6102).

The plans posted on 17th October were agreed to at the meeting on
Friday
18th and are now the basis for the next planning stage. Some small
details
on some floors still have to be decided and I will contact the relevant
groups about this in the course of next week.
A meeting was held on Tuesday 29th Oct. concerning the planning of
the gas supply system. An information visit was made to MC2's central
gas
supply. The extent of centralisation/local supply needed to satisfy
safety
requirements/reduce rental costs but also keep some necessary
flexibility
was discussed. Lists of the gas requirements and the solution presented
by Air Liquide, used in the systemhandling, were distributed.
Another
meeting is scheduled for Thursday 7th November at 13:00.

We have been discussing two possible scenarios for restructuring. Both
involve renovating Fhuset. Scenario A involves leaving Soliden,
Scenario
B allows us to keep Soliden and give up more of Trapphuset and Origo.
At a meeting today with the research group leaders and other senior
faculty the majority opinion was that scenario B is the best. This is
the
option that the Dean will include in the
restructuring plan that will be presented to the board of Chalmers
AB on September 18.
Scenario B involves the following:
* Trapphuset, floors 1 and 2 and 3 are evacuated
* The Origo 4th floor Library is reduced in size and Administration
(kansli och studieexpedition) is moved to the freed space.
* Fokus/Hilbertrum is moved to where our Workshop is now in Fhuset
* Workshop to be shared with Chemistry (KB-sektionen och Kemi/GU) and
be in the Chemistry building
* ET-lab in "47 års byggnad" is evacuated
* Computer rooms stay on 4th floor of Trapphuset
* Physical resource theory moves out of Origo south level 6; levels
5 (Environmental Physics) and level 7 (NP group rooms) are also
evacuated
A total area of nearly 4000 sq m will be evacuated.
This implies that some rearrangements of the Fhuset planning are
required.
Rough sketches showing the major changes and the areas allocated for
different
purposes can be found below. The planning of three of the floors is
unchanged:
Levels 3, 4 and 8.
The main implications are:
* Surface Physics (S. Andersson) moves to Soliden
* Most of the Chemical Physics (Kasemo) activities moves to one floor
of Soliden. There is not enough space for all of the group. Bio
activities
(ca. 150 m2 lab and offices) should stay in Fhuset (?). The placement
of
this group is changed (e.g. to Level 5) to allow us to evacuate all of
Level 7 to make room for undergraduate teaching labs. The
students
will have access to these labs (and ET labs) via MC2 and will not have
free access to the rest of Fhuset.
* 300 m2 on Level 6 is planned for ET labs
* One theory group will move to the office space on Level 6.
* Offices on Level 7, apart from those needed by teaching lab staff,
will be "spares".
* There are two possibilities for Level 5: Either Condensed Matter
Physics/Materials Physics has offices here with labs split between this
floor and the basement OR Solid State Physics/Electronic Structure of
Condensed
Matter moves to Level 5 from Soliden and Condensed Matter
Physics/Materials
Physics moves to one floor in Soliden.

From now on the numbering of the floors in Forskarhuset will be changed
to be more compatible with the MC2 numbering. I.e. level 2 will now be
level 4 etc. The moving plans have been adjusted accordingly.
2002-03-12
The latest version of the moving plans can be downloaded from here.
All earlier versions have been removed.
2002-02-28
The discussions with Akademiska House and the technical consultants
have led to some changes in the removal plan that I sent out
previously.
Instead of starting with the renovation of the central renovation
shaft,
we should now start with the Eastern shaft. This will avoid the general
closure of the building for 2-3 months and is therefore of advantage to
all of us. it does however lead to some logistical problems with
planning
the moves. Most of you are unaffected in terms of overall final
placement
but please take the time to look over the revised version and inform me
next week of any major difficulties. It can be downloaded from here.
There will be a meeting of the Fhuset planning group on Tuesday 12th
March at 13.00 in F6306 to discuss this.
Next week Monday-Wednesday (4th-6th March) we will have the first
discussions
with the architect. These will concentrate on the office areas. The
technical
lab details will be discussed at a slightly later period once we are
sure
that the revised plan is possible.

majority only move once or not at all) can be downloaded from here(powerpoint

planning
and is based on the placement scenario 1 (discussed on 25th January).

Akademiska Hus is now working on their own calculations concerning the cost estimate for the renovation of the Forskarhus (for some reason this has to be done separately from Chalmers Fastighet who have already made their cost estimates!). The Akademiska Hus numbers will be used for the final investment decision, to be made next summer (see timeplan).
A decision concerning the scope of the renovation will be taken at the Chalmers Board Meeting in December. It will in any case be a major renovation involving replacement of the technical installations. The question still to be answered is concerned mainly with changes to the facade and the scope of the office area re-organisation.
We are now working together with an architect to suggest ways of arranging the new, enlarged office areas and to optimise the amount of light entering the building. We will present the results of this in an open meeting during the second half of January. Everyone interested in the new Forskarhuset plans should attend this meeting. There will be an opportunity to discuss the office solutions with the architect and to look at (and play with) a computer model of the new areas.
We will also arrange meetings with the Forskarhuset group leaders and the technical representatives of the groups during January (from week 3). The final detailed laboratory layouts and placements of all the equipment will need to be finalised at the beginning of 2002. This is needed for the detailed technical planning of the renovation and planning of the renovation logisitics (which labs get done when) in order to minimise the amount of disruption to the experimental activities.

As you have already been informed by Mats Jonson, the Chalmers Board agreed on 24th October to start the renovation/re-building project of Forskarhuset. A copy of the email message sent out by Mats is given below (in Swedish).
This means that the clock is ticking from 24th October with a planning/building time of 34 months. A file giving the planned time schedule can be found here (timeplan.pdf).
The actual details of the full scope of the renovation are not yet certain but it will involve replacement of the installations and a re-organisation of the office areas (see below). An architect has been appointed to provide us with examples of the new office space. As soon as these ideas are available we will organise a section meeting to present them and discuss the alternatives (probably early in January 2002).
Mat's Email from 24th October
Dessutom installationer
bord. Rektor argumenterade dock starkt emot att tänka i
termer av ett nytt hus någon annan stans på området.
2001-09-19
The information to be used for the cost estimate of the Forskarhus
renovation has now been delivered to the consultants appointed by
Chalmers
Fastighet. The cost estimate will be an important input to the
discussion
and decision of Chalmers Board on 24th October concerning the approval
of the project. The cost estimate is based on a full renovation. More
information
on the time schedule for the project will be given after this but it is
almost certain that building work will not begin until 2003.
The information we have delivered incorporates the RFP files completed by all involved groups before the summer. A large excel file containing all the summarised information can be downloaded from here ( kalkylunderlag.xls ). The groups are identified by their initials (e.g. AF = Atomfysik). Each laboratory is identified by the group initials and a running number. These designations are also used on the floor plans given below. Teaching and general areas (e.g. chemistry lab, Fysikdator) are designated with S.
A preliminary plan of the position of the group laboratories, teaching laboratories etc. is being used as a basis for the cost estimate. This should not be considered as the "final solution" but shows that the available space can be used efficiently. It is based on the plan presented by Eleanor Campbell before the summer. The estimate is also made assuming that the renovation can be done in stages in order to minimise the amount of time that the laboratories are "out of action". This is presently based on Eleanor's plan from May. There are still a few minor points that need to be clarified but they will not affect the cost estimate. Fysikdatorn, technical service (including store) and the workshop will be placed in the basement area (plan 1).
plan 1 plan 2 plan 3 plan 4 plan 5 plan 6
The costs for the office areas will be estimated assuming that all offices are "cells". This will maximise the number of walls needed and therefore give an upper limit on the cost. How the offices on a given floor will finally be arranged will be a matter for the groups sharing that floor to decide.
Other items being considered for the cost estimates are the following (see list prepared by Mats Norden for price estimate of some of the items):
