Materials Theory, 5 p.
of the Graduate School in Materials Science (also nfsm)
[Includes Materials Theory, 2p (FTF100) and 4p (FTF105), thanks to the strong individualization within the course].

Weekly program

Week 1

Monday January 20, in Delfinen (on reserve: FL52) at 10.00 a.m.

1) Welcome!
2) List of participants.
3) Teachers: Shiwu Gao (SG), Per Hyldgaard (PH), Bengt Lundqvist, (BL) Staffan Ovesson (SO), Mats
Persson (MP), Behrooz Razanejad (BR), Elsebeth Schröder (ES), ...
4) Information about the course (BL).
5) Lectures on
    * The Physics of Materials (BL);
    * The Role of Materials Theory in Materials Science:
        ** From Qualitative Accounts to Quantitative Ones (BL),
        ** Building Materials Atom by Atom (MP),
        ** Why I like materials theory (PH),
        ** Molecules and solid surfaces -- two very different examples of materials theory applications  (ES),
        ** The Three Pillars of Materials Science: Experiment, Theory, and Computer Simulations (BL??).
* The individuality of atoms in molecules and materials, time permitting (BL).

Monday - Friday:

1) Computer exercizes: Why not get used to the computer by some simulation projects (Ising model, Burger's vector, ...).
Look up the booking list to see when Behrooz is available for a brief introduction.
2) Project: The project list will successively grow. Have a look now and then to see what the problems are like. If you have made up your mind: Sign up on the sign-up list.
3) Home-work problems will come at the end of this and in the beginning of next.
4) Quiz: The first one will come late next week. In the meantime: Read the question list and get familiar with typical questions!

Friday January 24,  in Delfinen (on reserve: ??) at 10.00 a.m.

1) Lectures on
    * The Role of Materials Theory in Materials Science:
        ** Material theory from different perspectives (SG),
        ** Some Success Stories (??),
        ** Why I Like Materials Theory (??)
* The individuality of atoms in molecules and materials, cont. (BL);
* The density-functional theory as a basis, intr. (BL);
* Quantum Mechanics for Those Who do not Know Quantum Mechanics:
    ** Particle-Wave Duality;
