Physics and Engineering Physics - Nanophysics

International Master's Programme
1998/99
Chalmers University of Technology

The Master's programme "Physics and Engineering Physics - Nanophysics" is directed towards students aiming at careers in research and development - R&D - in University or Industrial environments.

Nanoscale Physics, Superconductivity, and Advanced Materials Physics are cornerstones of basic and applied research at the School of Physics and Engineering Physics at Chalmers.

Nanophysics - what is that?

The shrinking sizes of artificially fabricated structures into the nanometer range will lead to a whole new world of electronics - quantum phenomena actively made use of in various kinds of electronic, optical, superconducting and molecular devices.

Many future applications in telecommunications, computing, information systems, biomaterials and medicin will be based on research and development in nanoscale technologies. Knowledge of these fields will therefore be important both at University and in Industry.

In this perspective, Nanophysics in a wide sense will be at the focus of the Master's Programme in Physics and Engineering Physics.

The Master's Programme

The programme assumes that all students have a B.Sc. in Physics (or equivalent) and have passed introductory courses in Electromagnetic Field Theory, Quantum Physics, Thermal Physics and Solid State Physics.

The backbone of the programme is formed by

five compulsory courses

(20 credit units in total):

providing the foundation for different specializations in the form of

three elective programs

(20 credit units each):

The Physics and Engineering Physics programme is concluded with a

Master's Thesis

(20 credit units)

conducted at R&D laboratories at Chalmers or in Industry.
