If vibrational motion of different
chemical units of the same type gets correlated,
then the vibration splits into several
modes, each with a particular phase relation between the motion of the
correlated units.
If vibrations of different
molecules of the same type gets correlated,
a similar splitting effect is observed. This
is then called correlation field splitting
and is commonly encountered in, e.g., molecular crystals (that is, crystals
composed of molecules).
