Draft Resume of the 3nd International Workshop on Project Submillimetron Bjorkliden, Kiruna, Sweden, March 11-18, 2000 Organizing Committee: Leonid Kuzmin, Gothenburg – Chairman Tord Claeson, Gothenburg Michael Tarasov, Moscow Jukka Pekola, Jyväskylä Ann-Marie Frykestig, Gothenburg The workshop and satellite events was supported by STINT, Swedish Institute, NFR and RFBR. Workshop content The main topics of the Workshop: -Development of a Hot-Electron Microbolometer with Andreev Mirrors and other concepts of supersensitive microbolometers. -Development of a Submillimeter Cryogenic Telescope and its integration in the International Space Station. -International cooperation in Project Submillimetron. Satellite events of the workshop: The 1st Swedish-Russian-Finnish School for Young Scientists "From Andreev Reflection to the International Space Station through Bjorkliden" Bjorkliden, Kiruna, Sweden, March 11-18, 2000 Meeting in Swedish National Space Board on project Submillimetron and project Odin, Stockholm, March 20, 2000. The list of participants of the Workshop and School is shown in Appendix A1, the program is given in Appendix A2. The list of participants and the program of the Stockholm meeting are shown in Appendix A3. During period after the second Workshop (October 1999): - continuing the installation of the new technological and testing equipment and ordered an additional equipment (Appendix A4), - fabricating new experimental samples of bolometers, continued experimental and theoretical investigations aimed on bolometers development and space experiment preparation (results are reflected in scientific publications listed in Appendix A5), - continuing scientific analysis and technical developments on Submillimetron project, after the current stage of consideration the Russian Aero-Space Agency approved the Submillimetron project for the 2-d stage of ISS realization (after years 2004 – 2005). The results of works for was presented and discussed on the Workshop and School. The abstracts and viewgraphs of presentations are collected in the proceedings of the School (Appendix A6). A main part of the workshop materials is presented on the Internet: http://fy.chalmers.se/~f4agro/MAR2000/ http://fy.chalmers.se/~f4agro/Submillimetron/ as long as the previous materials: http://fy.chalmers.se/~f4agro/workshop.htm http://fy.chalmers.se/~kuzmin/Submillimetron.html http://www.asc.rssi.ru/submillimetron/submill.htm http://www.asc.rssi.ru/submillimetron/mm/ http://boojum.hut.fi/Andreev/AndreevCS.html http://fy.chalmers.se/~f4agro/IMAGES/ Workshop results The workshop participants mark: - progress in development of supersensitive microbolometers, - progress in Submillimetron telescope concept The recommendations of the workshop on future collaboration: - continuing existing international cooperation in submillimeter microbolometer development for space use between Russia (ASC, IRE, KIPP), Sweden (CTH), Finland (Jyvaskyla Univ., Metorex), USA (NIST, UCB, JPL); - increasing activity in international cooperation with NASA (ADR cooling: ASC-GSFC, ACS cooling: ASC-JPL), ESA, Japan, , Germany and other countries in following fields: detectors (arrays, electronics), focal instruments (submm, IR), space refrigerators, optics, pointing systems, onboard electronics and mechanics integration, instrumentation for tests, ground operations and data analysis; - investigating possibilities on cooperation in balloon tests of microbolometers with France (ASC-IAS), Italy (ASC-U.Roma), Sweden (CTH-Esrange), in optics – with ESA-ESTEC (CTH-SNSB), Danemark (ASC-TAC-DSRI), in IR detectors – with Japan (ASC-IKI-ISAS), in using of technologies developed for Odin satellite (ASC – OSO - Stockholm Obs. - SNSB); - carry out the next meeting on 23-25 October 2000, Göteborg, Sweden, 17-24 March 2001, Björkliden, Sweden. The recommendations of the workshop on developments in the period to the next meeting: - preparing updated version of the proposal on the Submillimetrion project: English version (ASC-CTH), Russian version (ASC-CTH); - preparing filters (or interferometers) for submm waves measurements (ASC-CTH); - determination of technical requirements for draft project (ASC); - measuring the optical sensitivity of microbolometers at Chalmers (CTH); - measuring the optical sensitivity of microbolometers in Moscow (IRE, KIPP, MSU). The workshop participants expressed satisfaction with a remarkably high level of organizing of the meeting, which brought new information, stimulated new ideas and brought new concepts. They mark a high scientific and engineering level of presented works, and look forward to continued further joint research.
