Coating research

Introduction

The research on hard, protective coatings has a long history at Chalmers. The emphasis has been on different phases of alumina deposited by CVD - Chemical Vapour Deposition - on cemented carbide (WC/Co) cutting tools. Also other layer materials, such as TiC, Ti(C,N), TiN and lately TiAlN have been investigated. The coating technique PVD - Physical Vapour Deposition has also been investigated the last years. In the links above you can find a selection of results from the last years together with background information about the research.

The CVD and PVD research spans from the applications of the cutting tools, to microstructural characterizations and theoretical modelling by Density Functional Theory (DFT).
