Human rights?, Gem40, 1998
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,
that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,
that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
This was clearly not self-evident for the men in the "Heart of
Darkness", e.g.

Where are the roots for thoughts that "all men are created equal"?
- Where are the roots for thoughts about the superiority of the white man?
Lindqvist suggests connections to Darwinism and emphasizes
the initial shock caused by Cuvier's finding that
the mammooth had existed but is now extinct.
- How are our ethical standpoints related to the view of Nature ?
- Look into the role of the white men in the extinction
(or near-extinction) of e.g. an Indian or African tribe,
or the aborigines in Australia or at the Canary Islands.
- What Human Rights are "Endowed by the Creator"?
To what extent are these rights respected?
By our government?
By other countries? By our schools?
