The 2ndInternational School/Workshop for Young Scientists

"From Andreev Reflection to the International Space Station"

Björkliden, Kiruna, Sweden, March 17-24, 2001

Organizing Committee:

Leonid Kuzmin, Gothenburg — Chairman

Tord Claeson, Gothenburg

Michael Tarasov, Moscow - Gothenburg

Vladimir Gromov, Moscow-Gothenburg

Jukka Pekola, Jyväskylä

Ann-Marie Frykestig, Gothenburg

After successful experience of the 1st Swedish-Russian-Finnish School for young scientists in 2000 we decided to continue this activity and organize an annual International School for young scientists combined with the Workshop on Project Submillimetron of the Cryogenic Telescope for the International Space Station.

We find that the original idea of NFR and RFBR to organize joint conferences for young scientists is very progressive. We clearly feel necessity to involve young and energetic scientists in our projects including wide spectrum of tasks from very fundamental science to well purposed applications for the International Space Station (ISS). We organize regular workshops on this topic where we invite mainly the leaders of the groups. The NFR suggestion about conference for young scientists looks more progressive for direct involving young scientists in our activity and could be a good supplement to our workshops.

The main topics of the school will be nonequilibrium effects in mesoscopic structures and possible application of these effects in supersensitive systems. The special attention will be paid to

- Hot-Electron Microbolometers for ultrasensitive detection of IR and millimeter waves; other types of sensors.

- Electron cooling by SIN tunnel junctions; the problem of hot quasiparticles in superconductors. Cryogenics

- SQUID Readout system for imaging arrays of bolometers

- Quasioptics and HF Filtering

- Radioastronomical tasks in submm/IR regions

-Development of a Submillimeter Cryogenic Telescope for the International Space Station (Project Submillimetron)

- Novel concept of a Scientific Space Platform; Possible international cooperation. Participation in other projects

We have chosen a location close to the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) in Kiruna and the Space International Centre in Esrange due to space oriented themes of our school. We hope it will help participants to get better idea of research activity in Kiruna region and install better contacts between Russian and Swedish space agencies. Besides that, we would like to repeat in some extent the experience of NATO schools in Les Houches with creative informal atmosphere involving direct contacts of senior and young scientists.

Tentative list of Participants:

Alexander Andreev, Director of Kapitza Institute of Physical Problems and the leader of the famous theoretical school founded by L.D. Landau, Vice President of the Russian Academy of Science.

Preliminary program of the school:

- oral presentations of senior scientists

The program will include also building a snow igloo using only one instrument — a saw. It will be done in the best traditions of Eskimos snow art in contrast to our main competitor — the famous IceHotel in Jukkasjarvi, where specially made metal moulds are used in process of building. Photo of ALL participants on the top of igloo is planned for the last day of our school (insurance on igloo is guaranteed by the chairman) with possible registration in the Guinness record book!

School/workshop fee: 6000 kr - double room, 8000 kr - single room, 4500 kr — cabin for 3-4 persons. The fee includes full lodging and board, train in Sweden and a copy of the Proceeding. Limited opportunities for support are available. Application for support should be sent by January 31. As a rule, tickets for international flights should be paid by participants.

Deadline for registration and 1-2 page abstract: January 31, 2001

The fee payment should be sent to bank account of Chalmers University in Nordbanken: 3055-7711371

Name and address of bank: Nordbanken, 53 009, 400 14 Göteborg. Swift code NBBKSESS.

Don't forget to write down: Department of Physics, payment place 160602, project number 1626211

E-mail with information about sending money (or request for support), date of staying, and way of transportation should be sent at the same time. Registration form is applied.

The supposed number of participants is around 30.
