P8. LC
Device Fabrication and characterization
In almost all liquid crystal devices for electrooptic applications (like
displays) the liquid crystal (LC) material is confined between two glass
plates. By applying electric fields to the LC via (transparent) electrodes
the molecules are reoriented and and optical properties of the LC layer is
changed. By placing the "LC cell" between crossed polarizers amplitude modulation
of transmitted light is obtained.
In this project we aim to build and characterize a simple LC device.
The type of device will be decided in the beginning of the project.
The processing involves: cleaning, lithography (ITO electrodes), alignment
layer deposition, alignment layer treatment (buffing/rubbing), glue deposition,
cell assembly, UV-hardening of glue, cutting of ready cells.
The cells will be filled with suitable LC materials and characterized.
