Perspectives of the Space Submillimiter Astronomy

Workshop Announcement

Meeting to be held in St. Petersburg, Russia, 30 Sept. - 2 Oct. 2002

This page is to announce that the Workshop on Perspectives of the Space Submillimiter Astronomy will be held at St. Petersburg, Russia, during 30 Sept. - 2 Oct., 2002. The first day of the meeting will be at the Ioffe Institute, the other two will be at the Institute of Applied Astronomy and at the Ioffe Institute (TBD).

A few last years demonstrated the great success of bolometer array technique for astronomical observations in submillimeter and millimeter part of electromagnetic wave spectrum. Results of ground-based instrument SCUBA and balloon-borne experiments BOOMERANG and MAXIMA radically changed our knowledge about fundamental astrophysical and cosmological processes in early Universe.

The intended audience for this meeting is the community of specialists involved in cosmological and astrophysical theory tied with objectives of submillimeter space observations. This community also includes specialists in experimental cosmology and astrophysics of this spectral region. Generally speaking we are very interesting to meet with representatives of teams developing now submillimiter space astronomy projects. Probably this desire is not realistic due to hard time restrictions.

The meeting will be oriented on determination of concrete tasks for submillimeter full-sky survey (Project Submillimetron). However in general, the object of this sky survey and other infrared, submillimeter and millimeter projects is the same. Actual problems discussion and determination of complementarity of different space instruments will be fruitful for all sides. We hope that this meeting represents a rare opportunity for extending communications with community not involved in frames of ESA and NASA.

We will be circulating a list of potential session topics to be covered and further information about the meeting shortly. If you are interested in attending, please send a message to Victor Dubrovich, dubr@MD1381.spb.edu. Please also use this address if you would like to send suggestions for session topics or in regard to any other aspect of the meeting. For program, participants and other details see links below.

No registration fee is necessary for workshop participation.

The members of the Organizing Committee for the meeting are:
Victor Dubrovich (St. Petersburg), chairman and contact person
Dmitrij Varshalovich (St.Petersburg)
Andrej Finkelshtein (St.Petersburg)
Vladimir Gromov (Moscow)

Program Committee:
Yuri Parijskij (St. Petersburg)
Nikolay Kardashev (Moscow)
Yurij Gnedin (St.Petrsburg)
Vyacheslav Slysh (USA)
Alexei Goldin (USA)
Hans Bloemen (The Netherland)
Denis Puy (Switzerland)

Workshop Topics

  • Novel technologies of low temperature nanobolometers imaging array for submillimeter-wave astronomy.
  • The role of experimental methods for understanding of fundamental processes in cosmology and astrophysics.
  • Submillimeter research of the process of Universe structure formation.
  • Submillimeter research of stellar evolution: star formation and ISM grains formation at late stages.

    Venue

The Workshop will be held on 30 Sept. - 2 Oct., 2002, in St. Petersburg, at the Ioffe Institute situated within 30 min by public transport from the downtown with its famous canals, museums and theaters. We are certain that you will also enjoy the many cultural places. St. Petersburg is a pearl of Northern Europe located 300 km from Helsinki and linked by flight connections with many capitals of Europe. It was the capital of Russian Imperia during last two centuries of Romanov's dynasty, a monarchy closely tied with family relations with other monarchies of Europe. Following a legend, a previous ancient dynasty of Rurik's was linked by his origin with Norse god Odin.

    Passport and Visa. Accommodation.

Foreigners traveling to Russia must have a passport (valid during the time of visit and at least six months after it) and visa. For visitors without burocracy experience a travel agency assistance is strongly reccomended. A lot of agencies in Europe, US and Canada offers tourist visa with hotel reservation service in St. Petersburg.

If you prefer to arrange a business visa you shold request the Organising Committee for the official letter of invitation. During two week this letter authorized by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be prepared and sent to invitee to be submitted to Consulate of Russian Federation along with the visa application. Participants are strongly advised to apply for a visa ASAP upon receiving the invitation to ensure that the visa is issued timely. A reservation of an inexpensive hotel located near the Workshop site is available by request to the Organising Committee.
