How to transfer files between unix and pc.
There are at present tree major ways to transfer files between Fysikdatorn and your pc.
Samba server The simplest and most convenient method is to use the samba server. Its main drawback is that it only works from your office computer and not from outside Chalmers. The samba server makes the unix computer look like an nt server. That is, our pc:s can log on to it and it will behave just like any other pc. Then you may drag and drop files exactly like between any two pc:s. To connect to the samba server (the first time) is a two-step process. You start by setting your NT password to the samba server. Instructions may be found on the page How to set your NT password @fy. Observe that you first have to supply your unix password. In order to be able to log on to the server, your windows name (the name you see when you start windows) have to be the same as your unix name. If you have choosen a different name, then select: Start/Log off ... and type your unix name in the dialog. Observe that all running programs will be terminated. The second step is to map a network drive to your unix home directory. Right-click on "My Computer" and choose "Map Network Drive..." and type \\homedir\"your unix name" for path. If you select to "Reconnect at logon", the unix directory will show up as a drive each time you start the computer. More info may be found at How to map a network drive in NT/W9x. If you create a shortcut once you are connected, it will be simpler to connect the next time. If there are files on your pc that you expect that you may need from outside Chalmers, then you should consider putting them on the unix server instead. The functionality will be the same when work at Chalmers but you will be able to get them with e.g. ftp from the outside. FTP program How to run and configure some ftp programs is described in How to forward FTP with a Win9X computer. Be aware of that the configuration of F-Secure is dependent on what ftp program to use. Terminal program With the windows built-in terminal Hyper Terminal, it is possible to transfer files. The connection to the remote server is done with SSH tunneling through F-Secure. How to run and configure is described at How to run Hyper_Terminal with secure logon from a Win9X computer. Since this program is normally present on all Win9X computers, all you need is a floppy with F-Secure on. Disclaimer |
